It's been less than a month since Animal Crossing: New Horizons graced the world with its wholesome presence. The delightful island-set, sandbox game from Nintendo has inspired stunning user creations, beautiful fan art, and heartfelt homages to other pop culture worlds we love. There are the atrocities we've committed, like trapping our neighbors, attacking visitors with axes, and amassing huge collections of tarantulas to sell to children for profit.
And then there are the institutional terrors: the unexplained mysteries and disturbing evidence indicating a seedy underbelly to the "paradise" we've come to call our own.
From haunting speculation to alarmingly believable explanations, here are 9 of the darkest ACNH fan theories to ruin the last escape any of us have. As numerous Animal Crossing lovers have observed, the world renowned musician the importance of whose arrival structures a good portion of initial gameplay rolls up to players' neighborhoods wearing zero clothing. In New Leafthe player cannot change the setting. Animalese is the default spoken language of villagers and other characters in the Animal Crossing series. In most cases, each word spelled is approximated using the closest-sounding Japanese syllable i.
Orville pronounces "Alright" as "Toh". When villagers say numbers, they will talk rather clearly, like when the player is typing a letter. The name of the player and the name of the town can be clearly discerned as well, although they may also be mispronounced depending on the way each letter of the word is said in Animalese. Laughing and similar sounds are also discernible. However, much of Animalese is completely unintelligible unless slowed down.
In the original international release of Animal Crossingthe Animalese was changed to a series of computer-generated voices that could be downloaded on Mac computers as a text-to-speech voice.
But in the first Japanese release on the N64 and the two other updated versions on GameCube consisted of more natural-sounding voices for when each character of Kana is spoken. For each symbol, the corresponding syllable sound is played, whereas in English Animalese consists of spellings of each letter as each letter can be pronounced differently in the English language. There are 92 Animalese phonemes in total; 69 corresponding to kana, 18 corresponding to sounds and letter names that can't be approximated with kana, 10 corresponding to the ten Arabic numerals, and 5 sung.

However, there does not appear to be any direct translation. On items where the writing is more visible, the letters chosen will loosely visually resemble Latin letters. Bebebese is variety of spoken language for villagers in both Wild World and City Folk.
It sounds like a series of 'beep' noises. When a player catches a fish or an insectfinds a fossilor talks on any other occasion, Bebebese will play. The player and snowmen are thus the only characters who always speaks in Bebebese regardless of the vocalization selected.
Punctuation does not have an Animalese variation, so it will always be spoken in Bebebese. The word "Bebebese" is a combination of the language suffix "-ese" and the onomatopoeia "bebe", referring to the repeated blip sounds made when Bebebese is being spoken.
Occasionally, animals will speak in Bebebese, even if Animalese is the chosen language. This is portrayed by faded gray text, and signifies muttered or whispered speech. It was designed with flexibility in mind, so that a single script could be used for all characters' dialogue in the context of a hypothetical game. For demonstration purposes, I exposed all variables as sliders to be edited in real time.
For the generated dialogue, I wanted to achieve stylized gibberish in the vein of Animal Crossing, but slightly more legible. To do this, I determined which basic phonemes were most vital for recognizable English speech, and recorded them.
The engine then manipulates these phonemes in real time and plays them back in quick succession, creating the illusion of speech. I chose to define each character's voice through five core parameters:. Pitch - One of the simplest ways to change a voice also proved to be one of the most effective.KK Slider - Slow Dancing in the Dark (Joji)
I also used pitch to imply questions and randomized all pitches slightly to create natural variation. Volume - While volume could be used to create a distinctly loud or quiet character, this parameter is best used within the code's Enunciate method, which makes a sentence louder if it ends in an exclamation point!
Gender - This one was trickier to implement than I'd originally planned. At first, I tried to imply gendered voices by filtering between formant frequencies, but Wwise lacked a reliable way to do this.
Eventually, I decided to record a second set of phonemes using a girl's voice and create a Blend Container in Wwise to morph between the two. Tone - Here I used Wwise's Tremolo effect to add a toothy edge to the voice.
In a game, effects like these could be rapidly added and tweaked as needed. Speed - This is the only parameter not directly used by Wwise. Instead, it is used in the module's code to determine the delay between phonemes. The higher the speed, the smaller the delay. The "Random" and "Default" buttons allow for quick adjustments. Before taking on this project, I'd only ever worked in isolated pieces of the game audio pipeline.
Working like this, I became increasingly aware of the murky gaps in-between where the work became "someone else's job. That didn't sit right with me. I knew I would become much more confident in my various isolated skills if I could see them all come together. So with this, I set out to follow the pipeline entirely on my own, from initial recording to functional executable.
